Notes for Charles Morris Brown:

In the summer of 1923, he was given the job of dismantling an old hotel in Utsaladdy.  He had an agreement that he could keep any lumber he salvaged.  With that lumber, and because the family had out grown their home,  he built their new family home overlooking the water at Maple Grove.  He finished building it in 1924, and the moved in and remained living there until 1952 when they moved to East Stanwood.  Maple Grove is a small waterfront community about 2 miles west of Utsaladdy.  During the next few years, he continued to work in the woods and in 1927 started running and operating a Boat House at a resort called Camp Grande, which got him interested in building and running a resort of his own.  The 3 brothers began building a small store, large boat house and 23 small cabins across the road from the family home  In 1930, he sold his boat house operation at Camp Grande and opened up his own Maple Grove Resort. They sold their resort and semi retired in 1948, and began selling property on the Island up until they moved to California in 1956.  Between the time he sold the resort and moved to California, he went back to work in the woods for the grandson of one of his former employers. He worked for another 5 years, until his 75th birthday, to have the minimum amount of years needed to draw Social Security.  He was a tough old guy, he could out work men half his age.
