Notes for John Brown:

In the early 1755 a John Brown and his wife Margaret received a grant of 210 arces from the Earl of Granville for land lying in Orange County on Little River. This John Brown and Margaret was residents of Lincoln County, VA, either before or after the grant.     EARL OF GRANVILLE. There were eight Lords Proprietors to whom Carolina was originally granted in 1663. Among them was Sir George Carteret, afterwards Earl of Granville.[3] On the 3d of May, 1728, the king of England bought North Carolina and thus ended the government of the Lords Proprietors. But he did not buy the interest of the Earl of Granville, who refused to sell; though he had to give up his share in the government of the colony. Hence, grants from Earl of Granville are as valid as those from the crown; for in 1743 his share was given him in land. It included about one-half of-the State, and he collected rents from it till 1776, his dishonest agents giving the settlers on it great trouble     When the Lord Proprietors of Carolina surrendered their sovereignty to the Crown, one of them, John Carteret, Earl of Granville (1690-1763), reserved to himself property rights in his share of the land.  His portion was marked off in 1744, wholly within the province of North Carolina.  It contained half of the present state.  Much of this land was ditributed to early settlers through land grant offices in return for payment of quitrents.

He died on 14 Feb 1809 in Ballinaloo, Ireland. He married Jane Moore, daughter of David Moore, in 1749 in Spring Hill, Augusta Co., Royal Colony of Virginia. She was born in 1731 in Larchfield, Kilraughts, , Ireland91. She died on 09 Apr 1803 in Ballinaloob, Ireland.

 

Notes for John Brown:

In the early 1755 a John Brown and his wife Margaret received a grant of 210 arces from the Earl of Granville for land lying in Orange County on Little River. This John Brown and Margaret was residents of Lincoln County, VA, either before or after the grant.     EARL OF GRANVILLE. There were eight Lords Proprietors to whom Carolina was originally granted in 1663. Among them was Sir George Carteret, afterwards Earl of Granville.[3] On the 3d of May, 1728, the king of England bought North Carolina and thus ended the government of the Lords Proprietors. But he did not buy the interest of the Earl of Granville, who refused to sell; though he had to give up his share in the government of the colony. Hence, grants from Earl of Granville are as valid as those from the crown; for in 1743 his share was given him in land. It included about one-half of-the State, and he collected rents from it till 1776, his dishonest agents giving the settlers on it great trouble     When the Lord Proprietors of Carolina surrendered their sovereignty to the Crown, one of them, John Carteret, Earl of Granville (1690-1763), reserved to himself property rights in his share of the land.  His portion was marked off in 1744, wholly within the province of North Carolina.  It contained half of the present state.  Much of this land was ditributed to early settlers through land grant offices in return for payment of quitrents.
